  1. Go to github.com → click on top right corner "Sign up".
  2. Fill up your username, Email Address and create a password.
  3. A sign up attempt requires further Email verification
  4. Account created.

  Host Site on Github
  Firstly, create a new repository, you will need to fill in Repository name*. Enable repository to public and tick 'Initialize the repository with a README'. Click create repository.
  Next, click on upload files, proceed to upload your file. Drag and drop the project file in. (Remember to click in to the folder and drag your files in, if you only upload the folder the webpage will have error.)
  Enable 'Commit directly to the master branch.'- Proceed to commit changes. Wait a few minutes for Github to process your files. Once it is done, go to the settings (right below the star).
  Scroll down to 'Github Pages' - Currently your Github pages is disabled. Select 'None' and choose the 'master branch'.
  You will be redirect back to the same page, scroll down to Github Pages again and click on your link! Now you are ready to go!

Version Control

Assignment 3

Version control allows you to keep track of your work and helps you to easily explore the changes you have made, be it data, coding scripts, notes, etc. With version control software such as Git, version control is much smoother and easier to implement.
How to get started?

Steps:
1. Create a github account and install Github desktop
2. Create a repository (A "master folder" that associate with everything in the project)
3. The Github is a commit-pull-push workflow
4. Commit(online copy of the repository)
5. Pull- Before you make changes to Github, you need to pull.
6. Push -Once your files are updated, you can push your changes. In this case, both online and the latest version will be the same.

Computer Graphics

Assignment 4

Computer graphics is sub-divided into two categories:

RASTER:
• Raster images deal with pixels on the screen. It is used mainly for rendering images (e.g. Photographs). Images are represented by “dots” or “pixels” in a set resolution (number of dots/pixels per inch).

• Raster images are characterised by becoming fuzzy as you zoom/enlarge the image. As the image is represented by dots, as you enlarge the image the dots become bigger.

• Raster images are mainly used for photographs and image representation.

  VECTOR:
• Vector images use mathematical functions or algorithms to display images on the screen. e.g. a line is represented by two points and an equation to draw the line between points.

• Vector images are characterised by clean lines/edges and the ability to zoom in/out as much as you want without distortion, as each image is “drawn” using an algorithm.
  ---
• Vector images are great for logos, signs, fancy text and design files.

  The Free & Open Source Image Editor
  Firstly, let's get started with GIMP installation.
  Go to GIMP website and click on download. Look at the attach below if you are unclear.
  Let's launch GIMP now! Get ready!
  

  STEPS:
  1. Choose an image of your choice
  2. Add alpha channel
  3. Create a New Layer fill with white. (Drag this layer below the main image)
  4. Now select the main image
  5. Use free-select to cut out the background
  6. Zoom: Hold Ctrl + turn mousewheel
  7. Make mistake while selecting? Press backspace to undo
  8. Go to edit, click on cut
  9. Find a seaview image online and download into the local drive
  10. Drag and drop the downloaded background image to layers
  11. It will prompt you a message window - Convert to RGB Working Space? Click convert
  12. Uncheck visibility for white layer
  13. Move the background image to your desired position.
  14. Save your file
  15. Let's take a look at the final transformation!

AUTODESK FUSION 360

Assignment 5

CAD (Computer Aided Design)
CAD or CADD (Computer Aided Design & Drafting) are a set of vector tools that allow you to create your design, simulate and analyse the results without actually building/fabricating the object. Once tested, you can then send the digital data for computer cutting or 3D printing.

There are a number of software tools around the world. For today I will be using Autodesk Fusion 360 as what we have installed.
Let's Get Started!

"Initials Keyring" Exercise

Steps:
1. Left click on ‘Sketch’ then click ‘Rectangle’
2. Point Rectangle’ to select it
3. Click on XY plane and the screen cube will go to TOP VIEW
4. Click on the origin to start your rectangle size 60mm x 30mm
5. Select SKETCH Fillet
6. Fillet every 4 sides - make it 6mm.
7. Press 'E' on your keyboard to extrude the rectangle
8. Pull up the arrow to a height of 2mm - Click OK
9. Press 'O' on your keyboard to offset the rectangle - now move your mouse to the edge and pull in 1.5mm to offset
10. Now extrude the offset edge and press 'E' to extrude to a height of 1.5mm. Ensure operation is on JOIN.- Click OK
11. SKETCH 2-point circle and select the face of the object.
12. On the left side middle edge, ensure the '+' is there- Click to start the circle, make the diameter 4mm
13. Extrude the circle. Use the operation CUT - pull down the arrow to make a hole
14. Select circle - Click on MODIFY Fillet to increase the radius to 1mm
15. Select SKETCH and click on Text tool
16. The text box will appear , type in your lettering - change font, size if required.
17. Press 'E' to extrude your text sketch - increase size by 1.5mm.
18. Remember to save and export your file!

3D Printing & Laser Cutting

Assignment 7

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a term to describe set of technologies that create 3D objects by adding layer-upon-layer of material. Materials can vary from technology to technology. But there are some common features for all Addictive Manufacturing, such as usage of computer together with special 3D modeling software.

Firstly, you will need to go https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura to download Cura

You can create a cad file and export to stl file. You can also go online and search for thingiverse for millions of free downloadable 3D models

After you export the stl file, open Cura

Next, open the stl file that you wish to print

Click on (settings) -> (printer) Choose the exisiting printer you are using. In this, I will be using Ultimaker Cura 2+

With that, open the custom bar and choose Material (PLA) and Nozzle size 0.4mm

Slicing it would give you an estimated 3D printing time. Save it in your thumbdrive and now IT'S READY TO PRINT!

What is Laser Cutting?

Laser cutting is a process where object is placed in the X-Y plane and a LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is moved across the profile to be cut. The process of laser cutting is controlled by the speed, intensity and number of pulses per second.

Before we laser cut our object, we need to export the file format to the preferred DXF, PDF or SVG.

Open your design in Fusion 360. In the object Browser, expand and show the bodies/components list. If you have multiple components, make sure that the root and top-most object is selected.

Select the body which you want to extract the profile. To help you, you can turn off the bodies which are not of interest In this case only the FRONT component is selected Click onto the body surface to select the sketch plane.

Make a new sketch on this FRONT plane:

1. Create > Create Sketch

2. Select(L-Click) the body surface to select the sketch plane.

3. Important Click again on the profile (it should turn BLUE), showing you the sketch profile.

4. Click FINISH SKETCH

5. Your sketch should be located in the Object Browser > Sketches

6. Select “Finish Sketch”

7. Rename the sketch to identify it

Export the profile as DXF:

1. Right-click on the Sketch FRONT_DXF

2. Select the Save As DXF Option

3. Enter an appropriate name for the file e.g. FRONT

4. Note of the Folder where the document is to be saved.

Each laser cutter has a local PC interface with CorelDraw pre-installed as this is the default software supplied with the machine.

CorelDraw Import DXF

1. Create a new CorelDraw file (the default template of 40x28 inch or 1017x711 mm, the size of the laser cutter, is available).

2. File > Import > Select DXF file

3. In the “Import AutoCAD File” popup. ensure that the units are Metric and the Scaling is 1:1

4. Place the layout on the drawing.

Profiles are laid out to minimize material waste. You can also arrange your profiles to speed up the cutting process. Check that the profiles are correct before cutting. To cut click “Print”.

Embedded Programming w/Arduino

What is Embedded Programming?

A dedicated computer system with a dedicated function within a larger system to perform a specific task.
How to get started?

What is an Arduino?

An Arduino System comprises of Software & Software Tools including : Integrated Development System (IDE), Arduino programming language (C++ like), Development & Debugging tool, Software libraries (open source contributions).

Hardware such as ATMel processor board, Shields (Add-on modules), Sensors, actuators, peripherals.

How to use Arduino IDE?

Firstly you will need to download and install the latest versions from the Arduino Site, if you are using Windows just like me, you can also download and install from Mircosoft Store.

Next, write your code in, compile using the tick and click upload with the arrow.

You need to connect your Arduino Uno board to the host computer and identify and check the port by going tools > port (select the COM port)

Programs will execute after loading.

Project

For the project, we are required to create and demostrate the digital fab skills we learnt. The project must have documentation, idea, construction, how-do, instruction manual. We must also include CAD design with 2D cutting and engraving with 3D printed part. It must also be an embedded control using a microcontroller with inputs and outputs.

Where do I get my inspiration?

I look up multiple websites, Google many different ideas. I decided to do a mood lamp.

I found a wooden twisted spiral lamp which has a Japanese feel! I was amazed by how it was assembled. I would like to give it a try!

I sketeched out a draft idea on how my prototype will be design.

Next, I used a big cardboard to model out my prototype, the measurement was 100mm x 25mm for each piece. For the model, I cut out about 60 pieces and stack 2 by 2 together. For the assembling part, I used white glue to stick.

Next, I use fusion 360 to create the CAD, firstly, I created the wood piece of 100mmx 25mm. Followed by long side rectangle of 160mm (length) x 50mm (height) and short side rectangle of 140mm (length) x 50mm (height). The front and back cover measurement will be 160mm x 140mm. After that I created a hole in between the box to hole the lamp shade and also the stepper motor placement hole for the gear. I will be doing laser cutting for this process.

For the gears, I use Fusion 360 Spur Gear which can be locate under tools > add-ins > script and add-ins> spur gear. For the gears teeth, modular etc, please look at the picture below. For this process, I will be doing a 3D printing. Why I choose to 3D print it, is because a solid 3D printed gears will aid in the smooth operation while rotating.

Next, I screwed the stepper motor to the placement hole and wired up the Arduino board.

It will create rainbow glowing light and rotate side by side about 180 degree while it gives a welcoming atmosphere. Check out my final product!!!
